Forming Good Habits is a Choice

Today, on a scale from 1-10, whereas 1 is very unlikely and 10 is extremely probable, how ready are you to begin exercising, quit smoking, eat healthy, abandon bad relationships and poor influences, decide to do or create your best work, stop spending more income than you produce, give your time and talents freely to someone without thought of return, learn something new, eradicate an alcohol or drug problem, hug and kiss your spouse and kids, recognize and rid a bad habit, clean and organize your house and car, or relentlessly love and accept yourself completely? You cannot pick number 7. After selecting your question(s) and number(s), ask yourself, “Why didn’t I choose a lower number?” If you picked the number 1, please use discretion toward seeking expert counsel in whichever area necessary.

Food and Thinking for Healthy Living

If there are some poor food choices that you only want to eat once weekly in moderation, place them in the back of your cupboards up high. Out of sight out of mind. Thinking right or wrong brings about health or illness. Wellness or disease does not bring about positive or negative mental attitudes. Thinking right must come first and remain through daily practice. Maintenance via books, podcasts, prayer, meditation, blogs, among other modalities, facilitates right thinking. Moreover, unless you eat the right food, or implement certain truths, no nutritional acumen from any great athlete or guru will help in achieving your athletic or health-based goals. Following truths leads to fewer errors. Yes, mistakes and troubles help create outstanding education, yet don’t jeopardize your health trying to figure how to bring out the best you. Forget about masks and labels regarding how others and even yourself thinks you should act, look, and be. Delve deep inside to the howling abyss of your soul, asking difficult questions, deciding who you want to be and why. Do not be scared for fear trembles and abates when you faithfully believe in yourself. Denying yourself for future gain is rational human nature. Forgiving and forgetting is the only way to get ahead toward genuinely joyful success, furthermore, creating authentic peace, leading to love and altruism toward all.

Additionally, focus on drinking 8 eight-ounce glasses of water daily and eliminating or decreasing juice and pop consumption. Down a cup of water right when awakening. Dehydration increases blood viscosity, enhancing platelet concentration, promoting the risk for sudden cardiac death and stroke. People drinking diet soda tend to consume more food, thus an increased amount of caloric intake leads to weight gain. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Juices create glucose surges and insulin release, unlike consuming whole fruits and vegetables themselves, which encompass fiber, negating the sugar spiking effect. Grocery shop with a detailed list, and on a full stomach to increase glycogen, hence strengthening willpower to purchase only specific foods that help lead toward achieving your goals and maintaining your healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Eating

Eating healthy entails not storing high-calorie low-nutrient foods in the house. The types of food calories consumed are more important regarding our well-being than the quantity because of synthetic chemicals and certain ingredients. Look at food labels to minimize or eliminate ones having sugar as the first ingredient, while abstaining from trans fats, such as partially or fully hydrogenated oils found in many cakes, pastries, margarine, donuts, crackers, frosting, cream-filled candy, frozen pizza, biscuits, and fried food, among others. Trans-fatty acids can elevate low density lipoprotein (LDL-bad cholesterol), decrease high density lipoprotein (HDL-good cholesterol), and increase triglycerides, promoting the risk for coronary artery disease, stoke, systemic inflammation, obesity, and type II diabetes. Parts of New York City limited or banned trans fats in 2007 with a tentative U.S. nationwide mitigation and eradication plan set for the middle of 2018, which continues to be worked towards. Various countries either prohibit trans fat or mandate restrictions upon the amounts allowed in food.

Maturity

“A mature person is one who does not only think in absolutes, who is able to be objective even when deeply stirred emotionally, who has learned that there is both good and bad in all people and all things, and who walks humbly and deals charitably with the circumstances of life” (Eleanor Roosevelt). View life in triads of opinions, advice, expertise, and suggestions. Professionals and skilled individuals may believe they ultimately have your best interests or solutions at hand, while reality and reason points out three drastically opposing views. Seeking out multiple physicians within different specialties regarding treatment modalities can reveal optimal strategies producing superior outcomes. Similar philosophies hold true regarding seeking out great advice from people that have 10 to 20 years further experience beyond ourselves about the dealings in life we desire to victoriously overcome or goals we ardently want to achieve. Be humble, patient, merciful, and grateful, while crossing every person’s path, as these are signs of real maturity.

Health 90/10

People don’t become unhealthy because of 10% of what they eat, but 90% of consumption. We manifest fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control from 90% of what we think, do, believe, give, and whom we associate with; not the typical 10%. Do not be misguided by the 10%, lest 10% be transformed into a greater unwarranted amount. Choose the best for your life and the lives of others.

Man or Woman Up

“Never feel self-pity, the most destructive emotion there is. How awful to be caught up in the terrible squirrel cage of self” (Millicent Fenwick). Many people that drink alcohol excessively or do illicit drugs are trying to fill feelings of emptiness or a void in life. When a person loses control over themselves and the food or substance is eating (killing or creating a negative effect) them and not the person consuming the food or substance to stay heathy, invigorated with energy and aliveness to achieve greatness, then it’s time for a serious inward radically transparent and truthful self-examination. Be humble enough to ask for help when necessary. None of us knows everything, while acknowledging how little we know may ignite the fuse necessary toward seeking out transformational resources. Don’t die in lonely despair because an oversized ego or fear of embarrassment stole your true potential to fully live an extraordinary liberating life.

Healthy Habits

Exercise can release endogenous endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, thus producing natural peak mental states of feeling phenomenal. Illicit drugs and deadly foods containing cosmic amounts of salt, sugar, and saturated fats are not necessary to get an unsustainable fleeting high, which may lead toward requiring more of an unhealthy stimulus to obtain similar effects. The problem with poor habits, such as eating excessively, gambling, smoking, extreme shopping beyond one’s means, or illicit drug use is that they all release dopamine that binds to dopanergic receptors, thus giving a temporary state of feeling good. That brief state leads to more consumption or possibly looking for other harmful and unhealthy ways to achieve those short-lived feelings.

Exercise, Energy, Feeling Amazing

We must give to get and receive to give. Energy expended during exercise can give back and generate more energy in return. The goal is to be consistent, persistent, determined, dedicated, and self-disciplined. Consuming healthy fuel and eliminating negative zapping energy are critical steps toward enhancing this give to get strategy.

“Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination: never put off till tomorrow what you can do today” (Philip Dormer Stanhope, Lord Chesterfield). Procrastination and slothfulness contribute to our own expedited accountable demise. Hasten each moment toward growing healthier, wiser, smarter, wealthier, kinder, and better in all goodness that life has to offer. Let’s take care of ourselves being health gives meaning and purpose to everything else in life.

Whether we exercise to feel amazing, look incredible, lose weight, tone muscles, bulk up, build strength, generate a peak mental state, enhance endurance or agility, getting started is key. Focusing on the defined objective with a crystal clear vision is crucial toward success. Create the end result in your mind as a precursor to planning and doing. Contradictory to that aforementioned statement, just starting is crucial as well. Begin executing and let your mind catch up later.

As Tony Robbins advocates, “Turn your shoulds into musts and stop shoulding all over yourself.”⁸ Write down specific plans encompassing nutritional and caloric demands, aerobic initiation and culmination periods relative to anaerobic exercise sessions, durations, intensity; anaerobic exercises, strategies, sets, repetitions (reps), rest intervals between sets, and exercise groups worked during each session. Daily, doing calisthenics (using our own body weight), performing a few abdominal crunches, push-ups, walking briskly or jogging a block is all it takes to turn something we should do into action, which, in time, can produce a subconscious or automatic ritual.

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times” (Bruce Lee). Purposeful activity and performing a minimum of five or ten reps each day is pivotal toward successful habit formation. That daily consistency and self-discipline truly will deliver amazing results forming the life most people only dream about.

Initially, more or less repetitions, heavier or lighter weights, varying sets and rest intervals, longer walks, jogs or bicycle rides may ensue depending upon where you are starting from. Building on and growing from your first action can help motivate you to achieve the fitness goals you desire because progress generates additional momentum that helps cultivate our lives. That first step forward is often the most challenging, therefore think less and do more.

Once a training regimen is underway, concentrate on positive thoughts backed with action, while striving to obtain more beneficial outcomes. Truly, practice writing aerobic activity durations and intensity, along with specific exercises, amounts of sets, reps, rest intervals, and weight lifted during every work out down on paper or using an app to observe and track progress. Being aware of improvement delivers additional motivation. Forward impetus produces growth that creates more self-confidence and inspiration, which cyclically repeats itself.

Living Well Spent

“We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that death will tremble to take us” (Charles Bukowski). Continual growth and progress are pivotal keys toward living fully, therefore dying full, yet spent. You can’t spend your way to monetary wealth, only long-term joy fulfilling wealth. Remember to start where you are with what you have. No excuses, blaming, complaining, self-pity, regret, shame, or procrastination allowed. Get intentionally busy filling yourself up with greatness so you can spend yourself in an extravagant, yet selfless manner.

Forming Good Habits

“Who is strong? He that can conquer his bad habits. Each year one vicious habit rooted out, in time might make the worst man good throughout” (Benjamin Franklin). It’s not likely long-term, or healthy, to keep personal and professional lives separate. Eventually, the inconsistency will show up, resulting in ill health or failed compromise. People can turn from crime, becoming productive law-abiding citizens. Every moment of each new day, we all have the power, opportunity, and privilege to choose good over evil. Use the law of replacing bad habits with good habits. Self-restraint only takes one so far, therefore make and place healthy habits on autopilot. Triumphant victory belongs to you and me!
