If a gun was held to your head or that of a family member and you were told you must stop a bad habit to prevent death, you could do it. That is called intrinsic motivation. We don’t want to coerce anyone, although we must sell ourselves in order to achieve our dreams. Desire the acquisition of dreams come true as badly as you crave the air you breathe. Dare to be original by being good and principled, while upholding steadfast concrete moral values and associate with people that sustain and reciprocate the like.
One decision can change the entire trajectory and destiny of our lives. Hanging out with a gang or the wrong crowd can lead to mischief, pain, suffering, and even death. If you associate with pigs you will get dirty, and the pigs will like it. Eradicate toxic people like a bad habit. While being truly serious about change, similar to stopping smoking, cold turkey typically works best.

Take accountability for who and where you are in life. If you desire exponential positive forward progress and something radically different from what you are currently experiencing, definitively decide to valiantly make dreams happen, while never getting stuck stewing in the review mirror. Each day is brand new, full of opportunity and potential. Similarly, you can reinvent yourself daily by heeding wonderful possibilities toward further growth and graciously developing additional gifts, talents, skills, and abilities to give to our magnificent universe.
“Mishaps are like knives that either serve us or cut us, as we grasp them by the blade or the handle” (James Russell Lowell). Applying temporary Band-Aids to cover our past wounds, mistakes, or feelings of self-inadequacy is futile and may even be deadly. Choose to allow mistakes to be advantageous, while seeking out good in them by becoming a good-finder.
Changing our perceptions and attitudes can be very helpful. If we become disillusioned by the shoes that we have on, just think about the person with no feet. A little different perspective can change our own personal world. Life is too short and precious to be stuck in the past or future. Focus on fully living today and each day.
Get out of Loserville by running in the opposite direction away from bad influences. For heaven’s sake, stop making excuses and blaming others, which only hinders potential progress. Reasoning with logical rationale will not help us acquire our dreams and unleash greatness within. Real problems, such as the price of gas, cost of food, taxes, not being lent money, etcetera, are still excuses. Ask yourself, “Why am I not where I desire to be in life?” To remain blunt, the only accurate answer is, you. Remember, when we point a finger at someone else, three fingers are pointing back at us. Don’t fall victim to foolish mentality by being average or mediocre when you can become great.
“Never feel self-pity, the most destructive emotion there is. How awful to be caught up in the terrible squirrel cage of self” (Millicent Fenwick). Many people that drink alcohol excessively or do illicit drugs are trying to fill feelings of emptiness or a void in life. When a person loses control over themselves and the food or substance is eating (killing or creating a negative effect) them and not the person consuming the food or substance to stay heathy, invigorated with energy and aliveness to achieve greatness, then it’s time for a serious inward radically transparent and truthful self-examination. Be humble enough to ask for help when necessary. None of us knows everything, while acknowledging how little we know may ignite the fuse necessary toward seeking out transformational resources. Don’t die in lonely despair because an oversized ego or fear of embarrassment stole your true potential to fully live an extraordinary liberating life.
Individuals may develop and succumb to myriads of bad habits to futilely, problematically, and temporarily escape or numb pain, resentment, and guilt from the past, present, or future. Harmful substances or poor rituals may mask regret, self-pity, and sorrow. People may just not understand the problematic effects caused by their actions until worry, distress, and suffering consumes them. The good news is that we have ultimate unlimited power to choose differently. Governing that responsibility toward generating massive sustainable energy and self-discipline to architect our lives takes guts, life-long daily endurance, determination, and unstoppable focus. Work on strengthening both self-awareness and other awareness or perceptions, regardless of your own beliefs. Be one hundred percent accountable for you. Control the controllable and forget about the rest.
Feelings linked to our identity have the potential and incredible strength to drive us toward repeating both good and bad behaviors. Be aware what you’re telling yourself about you. Anytime people say, “I can’t,” or feed an addiction or poor behavior with self-limiting beliefs, they are making deliberate conscious and sometimes unconscious choices not to live out their incredible greatness within. Being aware of what you do and why can allow for conscious control over behavioral patterns, therefore giving people the power to consciously choose a fulfilling life instead of downward cycles of misery, regret, and possible early demise. We all have the ability to pick a new identity that cyclically moves us upward, onward, and lifeward.
“The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself” (Franklin D. Roosevelt). Most of the time, fear is a byproduct because of thoughts entertained by our imagination, including death. If death is an ultimate fear and the worst thing that can happen, why be worried about what other people think about you? We all will die someday, which is inescapable. What truly matters is how we live each day. Isn’t staying true to yourself more important than wasting your invaluable time or thoughts on frivolous nonsense?
“Death is nothing to us, since when we are, death has not come, and when death has come, we are not” (Epicurus). Do not fear death. Comedian, film maker, writer, actor, and musician, Woody Allen, has remarked, “I’m not afraid to die. I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” Death can be a sweet reward by living abundantly, while spending that beautiful tangible and intangible wealth throughout. Demise clears a way for new, allowing greater good to triumph. Persevering through struggles with thoughtful reflection, permits growth and progress, which can be a wondrous upward lifecycle.
“Who is strong? He that can conquer his bad habits. Each year one vicious habit rooted out, in time might make the worst man good throughout” (Benjamin Franklin). It’s not likely long-term, or healthy, to keep personal and professional lives separate. Eventually, the inconsistency will show up, resulting in ill health or failed compromise. People can turn from crime, becoming productive law-abiding citizens. Every moment of each new day, we all have the power, opportunity, and privilege to choose good over evil. Use the law of replacing bad habits with good habits. Self-restraint only takes one so far, therefore make and place healthy habits on autopilot. Triumphant victory belongs to you and me!
